From Driveway to D1
The Blueprint Behind the Journey
🔥 Physical talent gets you noticed — but mental toughness opens doors.
This is the mental edge behind the offers — built for parents and athletes who want to lead with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
Every parent wants to see their kid succeed. Every athlete wants to know what it really takes..
But nobody talks about the mental game behind the journey — until it’s too late..
- 🔥 When to switch teams (and how to handle the pressure to stay put)
- 💥 How to avoid burnout — for both parents and players
- 📊 What college coaches really value beyond talent and stat
- 📅 The mental toll of waiting — and what I wish I knew before the offers came
- 🧠 The mindset shifts that mattered most — on and off the court
- 🔑 This isn’t theory. It’s the mental edge we had to build — the hard way.
These aren’t just lessons I learned — they’re the mindset shifts I applied while walking this journey, twice.

This isn’t just theory — both my sons earned Division 1 scholarships using this exact approach.

Shawn Nelson is headed to Northern Kentucky for 2025–26.

.

Iowa State just added the WAC Player of the Year.
Dominick Nelson is transferring to the Cyclones after a dominant run at Utah Valley — where he started all 34 games and helped lead the team to a regular season championship and an NIT berth.
WAC Player of the Year. Proven Producer.
In 2024–25, he averaged:
• 14.4 points
• 5.2 rebounds
• 1.7 assists per game
Nelson was a force at the free throw line — ranking 13th in the NCAA with 237 free throw attempts and converting at a high clip. He was 4th in the WAC in total points (489) and 10th in blocks (24) while grabbing 176 rebounds.
He scored in double figures 27 times, including three games with 25 points. All three of those performances helped secure WAC road wins.
Nine of those games were 20+ point outings, including a 22-point showing at Stanford.
“An explosive athlete, who can get to the rim and draw a ton of fouls.”
Dominick’s path wasn’t luck — it was built on rhythm, work ethic, and the same blueprint we share inside From Driveway to D1.

In this clip, Shawn shares the mindset that carried him through every setback, every doubt, every game. It’s not about being the most talented — it’s about outworking everyone in the room. That’s the real separator.
“You’ve got to keep your head down and grind. Avoid distractions. Stay positive.”
In this short but powerful segment, he speaks directly to the journey of staying focused when the noise gets loud and the results feel slow.
He reminds athletes that success doesn’t always come with applause — it comes from quiet, consistent effort.
